Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes the use of leverage and timing and is designed to allow one to defend against larger, stronger attackers. For these reasons it is a perfect foundation for women who are want to learn to defend themselves. We offer two options for women interested in learning self defense.
If you choose to attend our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes you will learn to defend, escape, and even attack much larger attackers. There are many advantages to this option. It allows for training several times a week and thus the opportunity to perform each technique many times. Like anything, practice makes perfect, and this drilling (doing the techniques over and over) is the most effective way to ensure that you will be able to perform the technique when you are in a stressful self defense situation. Another advantage is the opportunity to train with male partners who are usually stronger and more athletic. This allows you to learn how to apply techniques against larger opponents. Of course, it is great for improving your fitness and self esteem and an increased fitness level could help you survive an attack while an increased confidence level makes you a less appealing target.
We also offer Women's Self Defense Workshops. The workshops are taught by our lead instructor, Scott Caldwell, who draws on his 20+ years of experience as a college instructor and 7 years as a police officer to present the information in an organized and interactive way. The workshops are two hour sessions that cover simple, basic self defense strategies chosen specifically for women defending themselves against larger male attackers. Not only are techniques demonstrated and trained but more importantly we discuss the importance of being aware of your surroundings. Specifically, we discuss common situations that occur in the greater Houston area and how to avoid these situations. There is no doubt that when it comes to self defense, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
