Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a complete martial art that was derived from the Japanese martial art of Jiu-Jitsu and was modified so that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and technique. A lot of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools focus on either sport grappling tournaments and mixed martial arts competition or they focus on self defense.
We believe the self defense aspect is extremely important. Most of our students start training in martial arts so that they can learn to defend themselves in a real life situation. We teach a curriculum that consists of traditional Gracie Jiu-Jitsu techniques that could literally save your life during a confrontation. Our self defense curriculum is divided into two parts. By learning our Stand Up Self Defense techniques you will learn how to deal with the most common standing street attacks without relying on strength, speed or coordination. Some of these common attacks include standing headlocks, front bear hugs, rear bear hugs, front chokes, rear chokes, various clothing grabs, wrist grabs, kicks and punches. We also teach weapon defense techniques that address gun, knife and club attacks. Our Ground Self Defense will teach you how to deal with a larger opponent whose focus is to get on top of you and punch you. The result is a complete self-defense system that has been proven to work for everyone.
We also believe that training for and competing in sport Jiu-Jitsu tournaments is very important. We have a very competitive competition team that has competed in local NAGA and IBJJF, gi and no gi grappling tournaments, as well as the Pan Ams and is actively training for the Worlds.
The overriding principle behind our sport Jiu-Jitsu tournament preparation as well as our self defense training is repetition. We don't feel like drilling is the best way to learn a technique, we think it is the only way.
